3 Ways to Keep your Fans Spinning Well in any Season

Whether it's heating or cooling, the fan is an integral part of your ventilation system. And just like any other part of the HVAC equation, fans and the parts they're connected to will need maintenance from time to time. If you're new to HVAC maintenance or just want a quick checklist of things you'll need to take care of, here's three ways to keep your fans spinning well in any season.

1. Clean the Blades

Fan blades have a habit of getting caked with dust and debris, both while they're being used and while idle. The good news is that, because of their shape and the fact they only spin in a single direction, the dust is often collected along one side, making for an easy cleaning job. You should already being doing this at least every month or so, but if you've been slacking off, here's a good reminder.

2. Check the Motor

A fan's motor is potentially the most important part of the entire unit. If there's a problem with it, then there's a problem with everything. Whenever you have your AC unit opened up, take a look at the motor to see how it runs and if there's any debris or damage that might be inhibiting its use. They're easy to take apart, especially when you use an HVAC fan blade puller, so just remember how it goes back together and you should be fine.

3. Lubricate

Anything with moving parts could do with some lube from time to time. A quick spritz of oil around the moving parts of your fan will keep them spinning with ease. It can also help to break up rust and debris that would otherwise cause it to catch and break down much quicker, extending the lifespan of your system.

Fan maintenance can be tricky at times, but it's necessary for the longevity and health of your HVAC system. Implement these three things into your maintenance routine to keep your fans in top form.
